The steamship Le sperance managed, during rough weather, to sail straight up on to a shoal. At first she remained aground for several weeks before another storm tore off her and she finally sank and came to rest standing along the steep bottom of the shoal.

The bow, which is partly broken off, points up to a depth of 11 meters, and the stern resides at a depth of 35 meters. Her hull is very intact and many details are still to be seen.
